Startup guide for Publishers

This document contains instructions to set up e-planning for web sites. It is written for the web site's webmaster or the person in charge of technically implementing the ad server. Both knowledge of HTML and the web site's structure are required.

1. Define spaces

Before starting we suggest you analyze your web site and define into which zones it is divided and in which positions you want to publish banners. If you are already using an ad server you can skip this step. Otherwise, you must select the positions and define its sizes. Also, you must define names for each zone and position. For instance:

Zones:

  • sports
  • entertainment
  • news
  • home

Spaces:

  • Inside sports: header 468x60, footer 468x60, tower 80x400
  • Inside entertainment: header 468x60, top left bar 120x60, bottom left bar 120x60.
  • Inside news: left header 234x60, right header 234x60, top left bar 120x60, bottom left bar 120x60
  • Inside home: top left 120x120, top right 120x120, footer 468x60

As can be seen in the example, different spaces in different zones can have the same name.

2. Access the interface

To be able to access the interface you should have received an e-mail from e-planning Support with your login, password and login URL. Access that URL with your browser and enter your login and password when required. If you cannot login, contact e-planning Tech Support.

3. Zones

In the zones panel you must define each zone of your web site. Click on add and enter its name.

4. Spaces

Once you have created all the zones, you can create spaces (ad positions) inside each zone. Click on the spaces panel and then on add. Select the zone and enter a name for the tag. Regarding sizes, choose:

  • fixed to publish creatives of a fixed width and height.
  • variable to publish creatives of different sizes.
  • invisible if only pop ups, pop unders or floating layers will be published.
  • text to publish only text links.

If you selected fixed size, you must also enter its width and height in pixels.

Finally, click on the OK button to create the space. An HTML code will be shown by clicking on its link. This code must be inserted in your web site's pages. Afterwards, when a user loads your web site in his browser, a call will be made to e-planning servers which will result in a creative being shown.

Many different types of tags are available. For a general purpose tag, choose the Javascript type with cache-busting code. It will serve any type of creative. Select the code and paste in your site, in the exact position where you want the creatives to be shown.

5. Advertisers

Before creating campaigns advertisers must be defined. Click on the advertisers and then on add. Enter its name, URL and optional comments. Repeat the operation for every advertiser.

6. Campaigns

Finally, you can create campaigns. First click on the campaigns panel and then on add. Many options can be selected when creating a campaign, most of them related to segmentation and scheduling. In this startup guide we only use the basic options as the advanced ones are explained in the User Guide. All options not explained here should be left unmodified.

Select the Advertiser which owns the campaign. Choose a campaign type among Sponsor (time limited), CPM (fixed number of impressions) or CPC (fixed number of clicks).

Enter the campaign's name and the amount of impressions or clicks, in case you selected CPM or CPC in the previous page. Enter the start and end dates for the campaign. Finally, select the spaces where the campaign will be shown (you can select more than one) and click on OK to create the campaign.

Afterwards, click on add ad. Basic ad types are: GIF, Flash, GIF Pop Under and Flash Pop Under. Select its type and then either upload an image file or enter a remote URL where the image is located. Enter a text title which will be shown when users drag their mouse over the ad. Finally, select the tags where the cretive will be shown and click on OK. Leave the priority and weight values unchanged.

Campaigns take at the most 1 minute to be activated. Once they are active, you can test them by clicking on the HTML icon of any of the tags where the campaign is shown. In the HTML code screen, click on Test it. If the campaign was created correctly, a creative will be shown.

For advanced campaign options and other operations refer to the User Guide.
